What is it?
Corn gluten is a golden yellow powder that is a by-product of corn processing. Corn gluten has been commonly used as a food supplement for dogs, cats, & livestock..
What does it do in the landscape?
Corn gluten is a source of 9% slow-release nitrogen fertilizer AND controls a very extensive number of lawn and garden weeds as they germinate. It is usually effective for 6 to 8 weeks.
Garden Beds
Hand pull existing weeds then apply corn gluten at a rate of 2 pounds per 100 square feet. Reapply whenever the soil is turned.
Lawns
Apply with a drop spreader set for 40 pounds of corn gluten per 2000 square feet. Water the corn gluten in slightly, and thereafter water as little as possible. Corn gluten appears to have its best effect under dry conditions. Any mowing is best done after the application.
Application
Remember that most weeds, in general, prefer a poor soil. Therefore, nourishing the soil with organic fertilizer and good quality compost are basic steps in any weed prevention program.
